Black Leopard Neutered! - Big Cat TV

Whenever you have to treat a big cat, it is a risk. Sometimes they can react poorly to being put under for simple procedures. And don’t forget the fact that you are working around a very dangerous animal. We had the chance to neuter Saber the black leopard. And we also took this opportunity to give him a check up, weigh him, and move him to another enclosure back on the tour path were he likes to look at the silly people.
Follow along as Dr. Liz and Scott make it all look so easy.
(Go knock the cat out, neuter him, weigh him, give him a reversal, and you’re all done.)
Big Cat Rescue is an animal sanctuary and we do not breed out cats. We spay and neuter our animals just as you should with your own pets. *some surgery scenes may be graphic for some viewers*

I think she was talking about the original owner being an idiot…but I could be wrong.
Animals suffer when …
Animals suffer when the mating imperative kicks in and they are not allowed to mate. There is no way that it is safe to allow them to mate and then have an abundance of even more unwanted animals. And even if you do vasectomies then the females have false pregnancys and fixate on objects in the desire to raise the non existent young that their hormones are telling them to care for. Too much suffering all around. I see this comment is old but I think this is important to know.

I wish they could have seen that video we had to watch of a leopard that attacked its keeper.
I don’t think they’d want to keep a leopard as a pet if they saw it.

I know of the S. …
I know of the S. China project and they have produced one cub and it is hoped that his offspring MIGHT have a chance to go somewhere once they get enough land set aside in China.
But this leopard is not in any accredited breeding program and is not a purebred species. So this is the right thing to do given the huge amount of unwanted big cats there are here in the US.

I can’t get if you BCR basically disagree with any program of breeding focused to save endangered species (with no pets’ business involved obviously) or if you aren’t spotted
to such a target just as a choice due to all org.and managing problems which would arise
if that kind of job got started.

There might be a couple of programs that do breed cats with the intention of releasing them back into the wild. But the amount of time and effort it takes to do this is a big factor.
We don’t do any breeding at Big Cat Rescue, the less cats we see living in cages the better, I’m gonna check out the tiger re-wilding program, where is that based?

hmm, actually not true. I know of at least one breeding program whose aim is to preserve the species and eventually release them in the wild. Do a search under tiger re-wilding.
I thought you guys were breeding the snow leopards no?
I think we should be breeding all endangered big cats with the aim of releasing them in the wild. Its better than risking losing them completely.

ak78au, The main reason for neutering Sabre was to make him less aggressive, when he could smell female leopards at the sanctuary. Also it gave us the opportunity to give him a full check up, weigh him and then move him to e new enclosure. There is no breeding program in the world that breed big cats to be released back into the wild, the best form of action towards saving a species is to protect their habitat and the cats themselves.
