Ragdoll and Maine Coon are the largest. Then the Norwegian Forest cat. All the others are going to be smaller than those three.
References :
He sounds like a healthy boy. Maybe he lived on his own in the woods and ate field mice and small creatures like that. You'd be surprised what great hunters and how resourceful domestics are. They can get pretty big too!
References :
Some of the larger pedigree cats are Maine Coons and Ragdolls. These cats (males) can go up to or over 18-20 lbs when full grown and not be overweight. Maine Coons would be some of the longest (lengthwise) cats.

My mixed breed cat measured about 36 inches long including about half of that in tail length. He weighed a solid 14 lbs but he could stretch out to open doorknobs (a good 3-4 feet) :)
References :
The Ragdoll, Their name originates from the cats tendency to go limp when picked up. The Ragdoll breed can reach up to 30 pounds, although more typically reach up to 20 pounds, with the males on the heavier side. Their hair is of a medium length, and exceedingly soft.
References :
Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Pixie-Bobs, Chausies, and Norwegian Forest Cats are all very big cats (upwards of 20lbs for the males).

The tabby markings you mention are typical of Maine Coons however. Does he look kind of like these?

In any case.. chances are he's a mix of some sort and not purebred anything :) But a little Maine Coon could probably go a long way as far as size...
