Whenever you have to treat a big cat, it is a risk. Sometimes they can react poorly to being put under for simple procedures. And don’t forget the fact that you are working around a very dangerous animal. We had the chance to neuter Saber the black leopard. And we also took this opportunity to give him a check up, weigh him, and move him to another enclosure back on the tour path were he likes to look at the silly people. Follow along as Dr. Liz and Scott make it all look so easy. (Go knock the cat out, neuter him, weigh him, give him a reversal, and you’re all done.) Animals suffer when the mating imperative kicks in and they are not allowed to mate. There is no way that it is safe to allow them to mate and then have an abundance of even more unwanted animals. And even if you do vasectomies then the females have false pregnancys and fixate on objects in the desire to raise the non existent young that their hormones are telling them to care for. Too much suffering all around. I see this comment is old but I think this is important to know.

I know you guys are top notch and I have much respect for what you guys do, but why outside instead of a lab? Just curious…
It’s a simple procedure, not as invasive as a “spaying” for example so very minimal chance of infection etc… Then the cat will wake up in familiar surroundings so less stress on the animal and the staff because we don’t have to move him back again when awake!

Yes, there’s no such thing as a black panther they are always a black leopard or jaguar, people just call them panther sometimes. Panthera pardus is their scientific name which is where it comes from

So are all these animals from people who thought it would be cool to keep a tiger as a pet then realize it isn’t so cool when it costs $125,000 a year to feed them. Or are some of them rejects from captive pairs or orphaned in the wild.
Many of our cats are former “pets”, which like you said many people think it would be cool, or they can “train” big cats and make them more domesticated but this never works and they grow fast, eat, a lot, require specialist vet care and will kill you if they feel like it so they are abandoned. We have a few florida bobcats that were hit by cars etc… and unable to rehab for release to the wild and cougars that were orphaned by a hunter, plus fur farm rescues, retired performing cats etc…
Why would you neuter a black leopard? Are they that abundant that its justifiable? What benefit is there to doing it?
@Vlaxitov Our cats are not eligible to be part of the species survival plan, neutering our cats gives us the opportunity to to a full check up at the same time and the neutering helps calm the cat down to give them a more pleasant life in captivity. Black leopards aren’t a separate species of leopard, they’re simply melanistic.

let the leopard feel like a male leopard not a babyless bitch.plus isnt the black leopard rare for its beautiful color .they should let the leopard mate with a female and let them have a beautiful baby for the leopards sack
@loveable699 Neutering Saber will give him a more pleasant life in captivity, plus we could do other tests etc…while he was sedated. Black leopards are not a rare species of cat they are just melanistic and we don’t breed at BCR this would just had to the problem of big cats living in cages
is it safe for the leopard to have a surgery in the open area ?
@emmettaddict17 Yes, because this isn’t an invasive procedure, it is easier and quicker for us, plus less stressful for the animals to wake up in his enclosure rather than our hospital
