Katherine Varjian, a 65 year old woman may face jail time for feeding hungry, abandoned stray cats in the City of Beverly Hills. Ms. Varjian has been feeding and spaying / neutering cats in a specific area of Beverly Hills working to reduce the number of homeless animals born there. She should be applauded for her efforts instead of possibly being sent to jail. Many citizens and humane advocates support Ms. Varjian’s efforts. We ask that Beverly Hills citizens reconsider the way they look at animals that for one reason or the other were dumped onto city streets or were left unsteralized, thus becoming pregnant and bringing new kittens onto the streets. Ms. Varjian is working to REDUCE the tax burden on citizens for the cost of capture, holding, feeding and in most cases, killing animals in our shelter system. Prevention is the answer. Also, these cats provide a FREE service - pest control that you can’t find in a bottle or through a pest control company.
I hope that the Beverly Hills Conference and Visitors Center will also support Ms. Varjian and show the world who comes from far and wide to shop, dine and be entertained in the City, that Beverly Hills cares for ALL its inhabitants… even if they don’t live in a mansion, stay in a 5 star hotel or do business on Rodeo Drive.

There was a Beverly Hills City Council meeting on 7/7/09 to put in language that will make it illegal to feed stray cats in which 3 residents supported not feeding the strays and there were about 100 people including many residents who supported Ms. Varjian’s efforts and TNR. Included among the supporters was probably an unprecedented turnout of representatives from many animal organizations including Kitten Rescue, Stray Cat Alliance, Coalition of Feral Cat Caretakers, In Defense of Animals, Last Chance for Animals, Best Friends and the Humane Society of the United States.
The Beverly Hills City council appeared to be wanting to be a humane compassionate city but also appeared to be confused and not educated on the issues, despite an outpouring of ideas and offers from the humane community.

Scottish Fold cats are the sweetest animal companions! Celebrity cat Basil Farrow — see more on his blog http://lacarmina.com/basilfarrow — cuddles, plays, cleans himself and MEOWS.
1. The cream-colored Scottish Fold cat’s meow sounds like WAHHH!
2. The fat kitty swats at a bee trapped inside a glass and nudges it with his nose. We made sure the bee didn’t sting him, and we freed it outside after.
3. Basil Farrow cleans his big fat paws and pink padded feet. La Carmina tries to clean his eyes while he rests.
4. The Scottish Fold cat loves his Forever Friends teddy bear! He licks catnip from the bag and kisses the bear. Then the two bears lie down and snuggle.
5. The purebred kitten pushes objects off a table with his cute giant feet.
6. Scottish Fold kitty plays with an octopus toy while lying on his side and back.
7. Basil Farrow lets out a big YAWN and then walks away on his short legs!

Virtual Tour and Information on the Pet Orphans of Southern California organization.
Pet Orphans of Southern California is one of the oldest active HUMANE ORGANIZATIONS in the Greater Los Angeles area with a private shelter. At our shelter facility located in Van Nuys, California, an average of 60 dogs and 30 cats are housed until they can be placed with new guardians. Pet Orphans has facilitated adoptions for thousands of cats and dogs since our inception in 1973. The majority of the dogs and cats at Pet Orphans have been transferred from local city and county shelters and are anxiously awaiting a new home.
Pet Orphans is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of companion animal welfare. We are committed to decreasing the number of animals euthanized annually in city and county shelters by focusing our efforts in these five areas:
Rescue — Saving dogs and cats in need and providing them with care and shelter while they await adoption
Adoption — Responsible matching of homeless dogs and cats with suitable adoptive guardians
Medical — Low cost or free spay/neuter and vaccination services and financial istance for severe medical need
Education — Teaching responsible humane pet guardianship and dog bite prevention with free presentations and handout materials to all age groups at public and private schools, community service organizations, Boys & Girls Clubs, Women’s Clubs and many others.
Training — with the number one reason for guardians surrenders being attributed to behavioral problems, we have many programs geared towards behavioral modification to ensure forever placements.
These services are carried out with a firm commitment to serve the best interests of the animals.
Mission Statement:
Pet Orphans of Southern California (POSC) is dedicated to combating the national crisis of overpopulation, abandonment and euthanasia through extensive education programs. While focusing on the universal concern, POSC is committed to serving its community by rescuing and rehabilitating homeless dogs and cats, providing them with exceptional care and then carefully matching them with suitable adoptive families. In addition to education and rescue, POSC provides broad community support by offering a wide range of services including medical/financial, spay/neuter and training istance, encouraging responsible pet guardianship thus reducing abandonment and other consequences that deepen the national crisis.
Please help all of our dog and cat pet orphans by volunteering at or donating to our rescue shelter and rescue causes.
